Ellis and Priscilla Slater Preserve: Now Open!

Sheriff’s Meadow Foundation is pleased to announce the opening of a trail upon the Ellis and Priscilla Slater Preserve on Chappaquiddick. The 13.65 acre preserve was donated to Sheriff’s Meadow Foundation by Ellis D. Slater in 1980. Since the property did not connect to other conservation land, it had remained in its natural state. In March of 2019, Allen Slater, Ellis and Priscilla Slater’s grandson, contacted Adam with the idea of creating a trail that looped around the property. He later met with Liz Loucks, and the brush cutting and shrub stubble removal took place in July. The trails were completed in the fall of 2019.

The yellow trail goes through oak woodland, with pockets of scrub oak, and an American beech grove. The understory of the oak woodland consists of huckleberry, hazelnut, and blueberry. Luna moths may be seen on the property.
We are most grateful to the Slater Family for their vision for conservation and for their wish to have the property enjoyed and shared by all.
