Squibnocket Pond Reservation

Squibnocket Pond Reservation

In September of 2020, Sheriff’s Meadow Foundation, in partnership with the Martha’s Vineyard Land Bank Commission, announced the purchase and sale agreement to one of the most important and ecologically diverse habitats in New England. This spectacular 304 acre property, now known as Squibnocket Pond Reservation, epitomizes the natural, beautiful, rural landscape and character of Martha’s Vineyard. We need your support to save this land.

Matching Grant from The Wyss Foundation and its chairman, Hansjörg Wyss
The Wyss Foundation and its chairman, Hansjörg Wyss have generously agreed to provide $1 million in matching funds to help SMF fulfill its fundraising goal needed for the purchase of Red Gate Farm. We are extremely grateful to Hansjörg Wyss and encourage you to spread the word about this matching grant opportunity.

Please help us create Squibnocket Pond Reservation.

Your donation will help:

  • Conserve 304 acres of exceptionally beautiful and historic land in Aquinnah
  • Provide access to a half-mile of Atlantic Ocean beach, reached on foot via trails
  • Preserve one mile of shoreline on Squibnocket Pond
  • Protect two freshwater ponds, Lily Pond and Witch Pond
  • Conserve outstanding natural habitat – windswept moors, rolling dunes, barren heath, fields and meadows, ponds and streams, forests, beach, and habitat for a range of rare species
  • Offer loop trails, paddling access, and opportunities to swim, fish, enjoy nature and more

SMF would like to thank the generous contributors who recognize the importance of keeping this land undeveloped in perpetuity, and the Kennedy-Schlossberg family for their generosity and the work they’ve done to make this gift to the people of Martha’s Vineyard possible.

A closing date is set for December of 2020 and we plan to have trails open to the public on this unique and majestic property in the fall of 2024.
