Sheriff’s Meadow Foundation and the Martha’s Vineyard Land Bank Commission have been working diligently on the draft management plan for Squibnocket Pond Reservation in Aquinnah. The two organizations have completed a year-long ecological inventory of the property. This inventory includes a detailed study of the flora and fauna that live upon and find habitat at this most distinct property. Inventory methods include a botanical study, acoustic monitoring of bats, field observations of birds taken over four seasons, and in different locations, and eDNA analysis of such aquatic habitats as brooks, ponds, and the ocean. It is anticipated that the draft management plan will be completed by late November, and a public hearing will be held on the plan in December. Following the public hearing, the management plan will be sent to the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs for review and approval. Once the Secretary of Energy and Environmental Affairs has approved the plan, various permits will be sought for the different aspects of the plan. It is our hope that the portion of the property along Moshup Trail and the Atlantic Ocean can be opened to the public in the fall of 2022. -Adam Moore
