Sheriff’s Meadow Foundation is pleased to confirm that on December 15, 2020, it purchased, in partnership with the Martha’s Vineyard Land Bank Commission, 304 acres of Red Gate Farm in Aquinnah from Red Gate Farm, LLC. This purchase is the largest single acquisition of conservation land in the history of Sheriff’s Meadow Foundation. The purchase price was $27 million, of which Sheriff’s Meadow Foundation paid $12 million and the Martha’s Vineyard Land Bank Commission paid $15 million. The Foundation is profoundly grateful to Caroline Kennedy and Ed Schlossberg and their family, to the Martha’s Vineyard Land Bank Commission, to all of our generous donors, and to the Martha’s Vineyard Bank, for working so closely together to create Squibnocket Pond Reservation. This beautiful property—with seaside forests, windswept moors, towering dunes, fresh Squibnocket Pond Reservation Conserved water ponds, flowing brooks, a mile of shoreline on Squibnocket Pond, and a half-mile of Atlantic Ocean beach, is now protected for the benefit and appreciation of all, forever. Sheriff’s Meadow Foundation expresses its sincere gratitude to all of the generous donors who made possible the conservation of this land. We express a special thanks to our many new donors, and to Hansjorg Wyss and the Wyss Foundation, who matched gifts from new donors with a $1 million matching grant. Sheriff’s Meadow Foundation is now working with the Land Bank on an ecological study of the land. The Foundation anticipates completing a management plan in the late fall of 2021, and opening the property to the public by the summer of 2022.
