 Function:   The Ranger acts as a Property Attendant at Cedar Tree Neck Sanctuary where they will greet the public, maintain trails, remove invasive plant species, care for goats, supervise public use and enforces rules, and perform other tasks, as directed. The Ranger reports to the Director of Stewardship and assists and works closely with the Property Managers.  

This position is a seasonal, hourly, non-exempt position consisting of 8 hours of work per day, typically 10 am to 6pm.  Ability to work weekends is strongly preferred.  The Ranger is not eligible for and does not receive benefits or holiday pay.

Duration of Job:  August through September.  The position may be extended through the fall, particularly on weekends.  Exact start and end dates can be adjusted.

 Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Represent the Foundation in a professional and friendly manner at all times.
  2. Assist Property Managers in trail and general property maintenance.
  3. Use power equipment and hand tools to trim and mow vegetation and to uproot invasive plants, as needed and directed. Hand pull weeds from restoration project areas.
  4. Care for goats. The goats are used as part of an effort to control bittersweet at Cedar Tree Neck Sanctuary.
  5. Provide a professional, friendly public presence for Sheriff’s Meadow Foundation at Cedar Tree Neck Sanctuary. Greet visitors, answer questions, inform visitors of property rules, and enforce rules, as needed. Promptly bring questions and problems to the attention of Sheriff’s Meadow staff.
  6. Keep properties in tidy condition by cleaning up and disposing of rubbish and other debris.
  7. Maintain trails and trailhead by trimming, cutting and mowing vegetation, as needed and directed.
  8. Monitor piping plovers, if present, and enforce related rules.
  9. Perform other tasks as assigned.

Compensation:  $15.00/hour

Qualifications:

  • Ability to greet members of the public and provide information in a friendly and professional manner, and to enforce property rules in a discreet and professional manner, as needed.
  • Ability to work outdoors and walk long distances in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to operate mowers, string trimmers, and similar equipment.
  • Skill in identifying common trees and other vegetation of Martha’s Vineyard.
  • An interest in wildlife and invasive plants is desirable.
  • An interest in conservation and in Nature Preserve management.
  • Botanical skills not necessary, but desirable.
  • Animal care skills not necessary, but desirable.
  • Personal means of transportation is required; mileage will be reimbursed upon submission of a mileage log.
  • First-aid and CPR skills are desirable, but not required.
